Julian Opie

Julian Opie, born in 1958 in London, England, is a renowned contemporary artist associated with the New British Sculpture movement. He is known for his distinctive style that simplifies subjects into essential lines and colour planes, drawing influences from classical portraiture, Japanese woodblock prints, and public signage. Opie studied at Goldsmiths School of Art under the tutelage of conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin, graduating in 1983.

Opie's work spans various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and digital art. He often employs lenticular printing, LED animations, and auto paint on aluminium to create his pieces. His iconic portraits, such as those of the band Blur for their album cover, have cemented his place in popular culture.
