Biography

Josh Rowell, born in 1990 in Kent, England, is a contemporary artist known for his exploration of the intersection between traditional art techniques and digital culture. He graduated with a first-class BFA from Kingston Art School in 2013 and earned an MFA with distinction from the same institution in 2015. Rowell's work often examines technological advancements and their impact on modern life, blending analogue methods with digital themes.

Rowell's artistic practice includes painting, sculpture, mixed media, and installations involving light, video, and sound. His "Painting Language" series, for example, uses coding systems to transform text from various sources into intricate patterns and colours, reflecting his interest in how information and language can be reshaped visually. Another notable series, "Virtually Fragile," comments on the ephemeral nature of digital information through paintings of broken smartphone screens, highlighting the fragile interface between the physical and digital worlds.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including in cities like London, New York, Miami, Basel, Hong Kong, and Mexico City. Rowell's pieces are part of significant public collections, such as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Gregorian Foundation in Washington, D.C. He has received several accolades, including the Public Choice award at the VIA Arts Prize in 2017 and joint winner of the Dentons Art Prize in 2020.

Rowell's innovative approach to art, which bridges the gap between the virtual and the tangible, continues to captivate audiences and collectors worldwide
