Biography

Shepard Fairey, born Frank Shepard Fairey on February 15, 1970, in Charleston, South Carolina, is a celebrated American street artist, graphic designer, and activist based in Los Angeles, California. He rose to fame in 1989 with the "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign, which evolved into the "Obey Giant" series, blending street art with cultural and political commentary.

Fairey's work is renowned for its bold iconography, inspired by propaganda art, pop culture, and social activism. His mediums include screen printing, stencilling, and collage. He is most widely recognised for the iconic "Hope" poster depicting Barack Obama, which became a symbol of the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. His art often addresses themes like consumerism, human rights, and environmental justice.

His works are held in prominent institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Fairey has received multiple awards, including the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award in 2009 for the "Hope" poster. His art remains highly sought after, with a strong presence in the art market and frequent trades, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in contemporary art.
