Biography

Sunyoung Hwang, an artist originating from South Korea and currently based in London, holds a BFA from the Slade School of Fine Art—where she was honored with the Steer Memorial Prize—and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. She has gained notable recognition, including the Chadwell Award, the third prize at the Bath Open Art Prize, and was highlighted as one of the ‘Six Talents to Watch from RCA’S 2016 Graduate Show’ by the New York-based magazine, Sight Unseen. Saatchi has also spotlighted her as a promising talent, and her artworks have found homes in private collections across the UK, US, Asia, Australia, and the UAE.

Hwang's artistry is manifested in expansive abstract paintings, characterized by a methodical yet spontaneous approach. This technique allows her to explore and articulate the dynamic interplay between structure and mayhem, culminating in a harmonious blend of the two. Her use of color is equally intuitive, with the hues for each piece being selected on a gut level. Hwang draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of sources, including the tangible, emotional, and psychological aspects of life, which breathe life into her creations.
