This 1959 décollage belongs to the foundational moment of Rotella’s career, only a few
years after he developed the technique in 1953 and just as he became aligned with
Nouveau Réalisme. These works are not merely stylistic—they are conceptual
breakthroughs in post-war European art.
What we see here is not yet the cinematic glamour that later defines Rotella, but
something more radical: the archaeology of the urban surface. The fragmentary “A”
emerging from torn layers is less an image than a residual trace of communication,
partially erased. The composition is dominated by abrasion, tearing, and the exposure of
underlying strata—gestures that reject traditional composition in favour of destruction as
creation.
