Rare Van Gogh for sale at Sotheby’s Paris

Van Gogh is one of the most cherished artists in art history, but that wasn’t always the case. Nowadays, his name, his iconic style and his troubled story have conquered worldwide admiration. But the worst thing is that he never saw the recognition of his incredible technical and emotional skills in his career as he passed away at a young age of 37.

The sale of this particular lot is super exciting because of the historical pathway this painting has undergone, given it is so rare and that it has never been publicly displayed. The painting, dating 1887, is an excellent documentation of how quiet and pacific the life in the streets of Montmartre were. We can see the iconic and expressive freedom of disquiet brushstrokes in every detail of nature represented. In warm yellow tones, we see small splashes of colour that create a balanced and enjoyable landscape.

“Very few paintings from Van Gogh’s Montmartre period remain in private hands, with most of the series now held in prestigious museum collections around the world.”

- Aurélie Vandevoorde and Etienne Hellman, Senior Directors of Sotheby’s Impressionist and modern art department in France

This painting is also estimated to sell for $6 million to $9.7 million (€5 million to €8 million).
