Frieze celebrates its 30th anniversary with an online festival

In summer 1991, Frieze was launching its first issue and its first art fair. Back then, Frieze was one of the few existent art magazines in the UK and it wanted to have a fresh, irreverent take on the Contemporary Art. This first issue featured the work of a young Damien Hirst (at the time leader of the ‘Young British Artists’ group) on its cover and also this is where you can find his first ever published interview. Looking back, we can truly understand how irreverent it was by this first issue – as much as Damien Hirst early works!

Now, Frieze is one of the most influential  and respected institutions in the art world. With a Contemporary Art Magazine and annual fairs, Frieze revolutionized the industry, with its critical thinking and innovative, fresh designs- pushing art and its communities to the edge of its potential. Frieze made the current contemporary scene accessible, easy to look at and digestible, mimicking the forward thinking of the avant-garde movement throughout art history- thinking past the current practices.

This year Frieze is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with big news: a new membership programme ‘Frieze 91’ with brand-new dedicated content, a new visual identity and a kickstarting three-day online festival. The Anniversary festivities will launch with an online festival from the 17th until the 19th or February. The festival schedule looks promising, bringing influential voices that accompanied Frieze during these 30 years. Featuring a wide range of intimate conversations between artists such as Rirkrit Tiravanija & Philippe Parreno along with others exciting events.

We would like to highlight some of these conversations with some really influential people of the contemporary art scene.

Tomorrow at midnight (GMT) it will broadcasted on Zoom a conversation between Anicka Yi & Hari Kunzru on ‘art & the non-human’. Anicka Yi is a conceptual artist known for her multi-sensorial installations, challenging the traditional perceptions of the human and non-human. Hari Kunzru is a novelist that explores the intersections of identity, globalisation and  immigration through his writings. This conjunction of backgrounds is what seems more exciting about this conversation. We are excited to understand how both will explore the subject ‘art & the non-human’ between the visual and written spectrum.

The themes of the talks are all very interesting and the selected panel make the theme sound even more interesting, to which attending any talk might be a good end to your evening.

For example, on Thursday 18th at 2pm (GMT) Jeremy Deller (Turner Prize Winner 2004) & Ralph Rugoff (previous Director of the Hayward Gallery) will talk about ‘art & politics’ and on Friday at midnight (GMT), we recommend Collier Schorr (photographer exploring identity politics) & Jeremy O. Harris (co-producer of TV series EUPHORIA) from eternity to performance’.

Oh! Side note, there will be sessions to teach you on how to make your favourite cocktail- art paired with food and drink, that’s a whole new level of pleasure.
