Biography

Born in Accra, Ghana, in 1984, Amoako Boafo is a contemporary artist who currently divides his time between Accra and Vienna, Austria. Renowned for his expressive portraits, Boafo employs a distinctive finger-painting technique to depict Black subjects, focusing on themes of identity, self-empowerment, and the African diaspora. His works are characterised by vibrant colours and textured surfaces, often featuring friends, acquaintances, and public figures. Boafo's art has been acquired by prominent institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Rubell Museum. He has received notable accolades, such as the Walter Koschatzky Art Prize in 2017 and the STRABAG Artaward International in 2019. His market presence is robust, with works frequently appearing at auction; notably, his painting "Hands Up" sold for HKD 26.7 million (approximately $3.4 million) at Christie's in Hong Kong in 2021.
