Andreas Gursky

Biography

Andreas Gursky (born 1955) was born in Leipzig, Germany, and lives and works in Düsseldorf. He is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary photographers, associated with the Düsseldorf School under Bernd and Hilla Becher. Gursky is best known for his large-scale, high-resolution colour photographs that depict globalised spaces such as stock exchanges, factories, and vast landscapes, often digitally manipulated to heighten their formal clarity and conceptual impact. His work explores themes of consumerism, globalisation, and the structures of contemporary life, characterised by elevated perspectives and meticulous detail. Gursky’s photographs are held in major institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate, London, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. He has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Kaiserring award. In the art market, Gursky’s work is highly sought after, with several photographs achieving record-breaking auction prices; his market is well-established, international, and notably liquid for key works.
