Biography

Cecily Brown (born 1969 in London, UK) is a British painter who currently lives and works in New York City. Known for her dynamic and expressive style, Brown's work merges figuration and abstraction, often featuring fragmented bodies, erotic motifs, and references to art history. Her primary medium is oil on canvas, applied in vigorous, gestural brushstrokes that evoke the physicality of Abstract Expressionism while retaining narrative tension. Brown’s paintings explore themes of sexuality, desire, and the complexities of the human form. Her work is held in major institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, as well as Tate in London. She has exhibited extensively and has been the subject of significant solo shows, including a major survey at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2023. Widely recognised within the contemporary art world, Brown’s market is robust and liquid, with her works frequently appearing at high-profile auctions and commanding strong prices, underscoring her status as one of the most prominent painters of her generation.
