Biography

Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and currently lives and works in New York City. She is internationally renowned for her conceptual photography, in which she assumes multiple roles both behind and in front of the camera to explore identity, gender, and the constructed nature of image and persona. Sherman gained early acclaim with her Untitled Film Stills (1977–80), a series of black-and-white photographs that mimic female stereotypes in mid-20th-century cinema. Throughout her career, she has continued to deconstruct visual culture using costume, prosthetics, and digital manipulation to embody a vast array of personas.

Sherman's work is held in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She has received numerous honours, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1995 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2016. Highly influential and widely exhibited, she is one of the most marketable and frequently traded contemporary artists, with a well-established secondary market and consistently strong auction results.
