Egon Schiele
Biography
Egon Schiele (b. 1890, Tulln an der Donau, Austria; d. 1918, Vienna) was an Austrian painter and draughtsman who worked principally in Vienna and became one of the defining figures of Austrian Expressionism. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele is known for his raw, psychologically charged portraits, self-portraits, nudes and cityscapes, often marked by angular lines, distorted bodies and an intense exploration of sexuality, mortality and emotional alienation. His works are held in major institutional collections including the Leopold Museum, Vienna, the Albertina, Vienna, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Although his career was cut short by the influenza pandemic at the age of 28, Schiele’s influence has been immense. His market is highly established, with major works rarely available and commanding exceptional prices; while supply is limited, demand remains strong, making his market prestigious but less liquid than that of more frequently traded modern artists.
