Georg Baselitz
Biography
Georg Baselitz was born in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, Germany, and he currently lives and works between Ammersee in Bavaria and Imperia, Italy. A pivotal figure in post-war German art, Baselitz is best known for his bold figurative paintings, particularly his trademark inverted imagery, which he began developing in the late 1960s to disrupt compositional expectations. His work spans painting, sculpture, and printmaking, often marked by expressive brushwork and a raw, confrontational energy. Themes of identity, history, and the human condition frequently recur, with his early work reflecting on Germany’s post-war trauma. Baselitz has been widely exhibited internationally, and his work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate (London), and Centre Pompidou (Paris). He has received numerous accolades, such as the Praemium Imperiale in 2004. Highly regarded in the contemporary art world, Baselitz enjoys a strong market presence; his works are regularly featured in major auctions, signalling a liquid and robust market for his oeuvre.
