Biography

Irving Penn (1917–2009) was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, and worked principally in New York and Paris during a career that spanned fashion, portraiture, and still life photography. He is celebrated for his elegant, meticulously composed images for Vogue, as well as for stark studio portraits, ethnographic studies, and still lifes that transformed everyday objects into refined formal arrangements. Working primarily in photography, Penn was known for his pared-back settings, exquisite tonal control, and ability to bring both glamour and psychological intensity to his subjects. His works are held in major institutional collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and he received numerous honours, including the Hasselblad Award. Penn is widely regarded as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. In the art market, his photographs are firmly established and regularly traded, with strong demand for iconic fashion images and platinum-palladium prints, making his market comparatively liquid at the top end.
