Biography

Josef Albers, born in Germany in 1888, commenced his studies at the Bauhaus School in Weimar in 1920. The Bauhaus, renowned as a pioneering institution for interdisciplinary education in art, architecture, and design, offered Albers a platform to delve into the "contrast effects" of form, texture, and, most notably, color through its Special Program. Over the subsequent five years, he became an integral part of the Bauhaus faculty, teaching alongside luminaries such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Oskar Schlemmer.

Upon relocating to the United States, Albers embarked on an experimental exploration of the optical effects of color, leading to his iconic series of paintings known as "Homage to the Square." In this body of work, he aimed to illustrate the multiplicity of color perception. This extensive series comprised over a thousand pieces, including paintings, drawings, prints, and tapestries, created over 25 years. In 1963, he complemented his color studies with the publication of the influential book "Interaction of Colour," which provided an exhaustive analysis of color's function and perception. This publication profoundly influenced artistic education practices, particularly Color Field painting and Minimalism in the 20th century.

Albers held his first exhibition in 1919 at Galerie Goltz in Munich and in 1935 in the United States at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. His first solo exhibition in Manhattan occurred in 1936 at the New Art Circle of J. B. Neuman. He also participated in Documenta I (1955) and Documenta IV (1968) in Kassel. Since then, his work has been showcased in exhibitions worldwide. In 1971, he achieved the distinction of being the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Today, Josef Albers' work is part of major public collections across the globe. He passed away in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1976.
