Julie Mehretu
Biography
Julie Mehretu (b. 1970) was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and lives and works in New York. She is known for large-scale abstract paintings, drawings and prints that combine architectural plans, maps, calligraphic marks, layered lines and gestural erasure. Her work often addresses migration, urbanisation, geopolitics, protest, war and the instability of contemporary social space. Mehretu’s works are held in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Guggenheim Museum; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She has received major recognition, including a MacArthur Fellowship and the US Department of State Medal of Arts. Mehretu is one of the most prominent contemporary painters internationally, with strong institutional support and significant collector demand. Her market is well established and comparatively liquid for a living artist, with major paintings frequently achieving high auction prices.
