Biography

Matthew Wong, born in Toronto, Canada, in 1984 and passed away in Edmonton, Canada, in 2019, was a self-taught painter known for his evocative works that blend a rich tapestry of art historical influences. From the fluidity of ink wash literati painting to the dynamic brushstrokes reminiscent of Chaim Soutine and Vincent Van Gogh, and the spontaneous marks of abstract expressionism, Wong’s oeuvre is a testament to his broad visual and conceptual vocabulary. His practice, which encompassed oils and watercolors, was celebrated for its exploration of space and the striking interplay between textures. Wong’s vibrant landscapes and introspective interiors are imbued with a sense of nostalgia that resonates on both personal and collective levels. His debut solo exhibition in the U.S. took place at Karma in March 2018, earning accolades from The New York Times and The New Yorker. He pursued a BA in cultural anthropology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, before completing an MFA in photography at the City University of Hong Kong.

Wong's artworks have been acquired by prestigious institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. His notable solo shows span global venues from ARCH in Athens to multiple exhibitions at Karma, New York, and Massimo de Carlo, Hong Kong.

In 2021, the Art Gallery of Ontario hosted a comprehensive survey exhibition of Wong’s work, marking a significant posthumous recognition of his impact on contemporary painting.

His educational journey culminated with an MFA in Photography from the City University of Hong Kong in 2013, after obtaining a BA in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Michigan in 2007. Wong's artistic trajectory included significant solo and group exhibitions across international platforms, culminating in his works being held in major public collections worldwide. His publications and a detailed bibliography further cement his legacy in the art world, showcasing a profound and introspective body of work that continues to engage and inspire.
