Nan Goldin
Biography
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1953, Nan Goldin is an American photographer and activist who currently resides and works in New York City. Her work is renowned for its candid, intimate portrayal of the LGBTQ+ subcultures, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the opioid epidemic. Goldin's seminal project, "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" (1986), is a slideshow and monograph documenting her "chosen family" within the post-punk and gay subcultures of New York City. Her photographs are held in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London. In 2022, she was the subject of the documentary film "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed," which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Goldin is also a founding member of the advocacy group P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now), which campaigns against the opioid epidemic.
