Peter Hujar
Biography
Peter Hujar (1934–1987) was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and worked primarily in New York, where he became a key figure in the downtown art scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. A photographer known for his psychologically charged black-and-white images, Hujar focused on portraiture, nudes, and urban subjects, often depicting artists, performers, and members of the LGBTQ+ community with striking intimacy and directness. His work also includes images of animals, landscapes, and the city’s marginal spaces, unified by a careful attention to light and form. Hujar’s photographs are held in major institutional collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Although he received limited commercial recognition during his lifetime, his reputation has grown significantly posthumously, with increasing institutional attention and strong demand in the photography market, where his works are now regularly traded and considered highly influential within 20th-century American photography.
