Biography

Ruth Asawa (1926–2013) was born in Norwalk, California, and spent much of her life working in San Francisco, where she became a central figure in the post-war American art scene. She is best known for her intricate wire sculptures, often created through a looped-wire technique inspired by basketry she encountered during her studies at Black Mountain College. Her work explores themes of transparency, form, and the interplay between positive and negative space, extending also into drawing, printmaking, and public sculpture. Asawa’s works are held in major institutional collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She received numerous honours during her lifetime, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In the art market, Asawa’s work has gained significant recognition, with strong demand and increasing auction results in recent years, indicating a robust and steadily growing market presence.
