Biography
Stanley Whitney, born in Philadelphia in 1946, is an American abstract painter renowned for his vibrant, grid-like compositions that explore the interplay of colour and form. He earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1968 and an MFA from Yale University in 1972. Whitney's work is characterised by loosely structured grids of differently marked and hued rectangles, reflecting influences from Minimalism, Colour Field Painting, and jazz music. His paintings are held in prominent public collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Canada. In 1996, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Whitney's artworks are highly regarded in the art market, with his pieces frequently appearing in exhibitions and auctions, indicating a strong and active market presence.
