Biography

Derrick Adams (b. 1970, Baltimore, USA) is an American artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Working across painting, collage, sculpture, performance, and installation, Adams is best known for his vibrant, graphic depictions of Black life that foreground themes of leisure, identity, consumer culture, and the construction of self-image within American society. His work often incorporates bold colour, fragmented forms, and references to popular culture, celebrating everyday experiences while interrogating representation and visibility. Adams has received notable recognition, including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, and has exhibited widely in major institutions. His works are held in prominent public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Represented by leading galleries, his market has strengthened considerably in recent years, with consistent demand and an increasingly liquid presence in the contemporary art market.
