Biography

Futura, born Leonard Hilton McGurr in 1955 in New York City, is a pioneering figure in the world of street and contemporary art. He rose to prominence in the 1970s as one of the first graffiti artists to bring abstract expressionism into the medium, moving beyond lettering into more painterly compositions. Futura lives and works in New York, continuing a career that spans over four decades. His work is characterised by dynamic lines, energetic forms, and futuristic, space-inspired motifs that distinguish him from his contemporaries.

Primarily working in spray paint, acrylic, and mixed media, Futura has transitioned from subways to galleries and museums, exhibiting at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. His work is also held in prestigious private collections, and he has collaborated with global brands like Nike, Off-White, and BMW, enhancing his crossover appeal. While formal awards are limited, his influence and recognition within both the street art and fine art communities are substantial. Futura's market remains active, with a steady demand in both primary and secondary markets, reflecting his enduring legacy and cultural relevance.
