Biography

Piers Alsop, born in London in 1984, is a contemporary British artist currently based in Bethnal Green. He studied Fine Art at Camberwell College of Arts, graduating in 2007. After an initial career in film, he returned to painting in 2018, gaining recognition when he was selected to exhibit at the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition curated by Grayson Perry.

Alsop's work spans a diverse range of styles, blending realism with abstract elements to create a unique montage aesthetic. His paintings often begin as collages from found images or his own photographs, which he transforms into vibrant compositions. He draws inspiration from Byzantine and Renaissance religious paintings, reducing them to basic shapes and vivid colours, sometimes incorporating elements of self-portraiture. His approach questions power structures and explores themes of truth and belief with a humorous touch.

Alsop's art is held in notable private collections, and he has exhibited widely, including at the Zona Maco Art Fair in Mexico City. His paintings are also frequently traded on the art market, reflecting a growing recognition and liquidity in his market presence.
