Biography

Abbas Kiarostami was an Iranian filmmaker, photographer, and artist born in Tehran in 1940. He was one of the most influential and acclaimed filmmakers of his generation, renowned for his innovative storytelling techniques, poetic imagery, and masterful use of the camera.

Kiarostami began his career as a graphic designer and went on to become one of the most celebrated filmmakers in Iranian cinema history. He gained international recognition in the 1990s with his films "Close-Up" and "Taste of Cherry," which won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.

In addition to his work in film, Kiarostami was also a prolific photographer and mixed-media artist. His photography often focused on the beauty of everyday life, while his mixed-media works combined painting, calligraphy, and found objects to create stunning visual compositions.
