Marice Cumber

Biography

Marice Cumber (born London, 1965) is a British social-practice artist and educator who continues to live and work in the capital. Her practice centres on participatory photography, collage and zine-making developed with people experiencing homelessness through Accumulate, the “Art School for the Homeless” she founded in 2013. By repurposing disposable cameras, found packaging and digital prints, Cumber constructs vivid, collectively authored grids and photobooks that probe urban precarity, voice and agency. Accumulate projects have been shown at Tate Exchange, the Barbican Centre, Somerset House and the Guardian Gallery, while collaborative zines have entered the Museum of London’s collection as records of contemporary social history. The initiative secured the London Homelessness Award in 2018 and the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2019, highlighting her impact beyond the studio. Although her output is geared towards social benefit rather than speculation, limited-edition prints and photobooks sell briskly through benefit auctions and partner galleries, creating a modest yet dependable market buoyed by strong institutional endorsement.
